The Hailsham Rotary Club has presented Anne and David Blight, the founders of the Starfish Project, with a Community Service Award. Community Service Awards are presented by the Rotary Club to people who it is considered have provided exceptional service in the community.
The Starfish Project is a method of training people who stammer (stutter) to both control and gain confidence over something that has controlled them. It does not aim to cure stammering as no cure has yet been found, but aims to control it and enable individuals who suffer from the problem to communicate. Anne and David Blight hold the Starfish project courses at the Boship Hotel in Hellingly which is also the meeting place of the Hailsham Rotary Club
In 2005 the Rotary movement celebrated its 100th year and The Starfish Project was chosen as the charity that would be honoured to mark that milestone with a five year bursary of £1,000 per year.
In presenting the Community Service Award on behalf of the Hailsham Rotary Club, Bob Macey, said "The whole Club continues to be delighted at the success of the Starfish Project and they have fully justified our support for them over the years. It is with great pleasure that I present Anne and David with this award to mark their commitment to the cause that they so passionately believe in "
The Club also decided to present Anne and David with a cheque for £1,000 to towards the costs incurred in arranging the courses of the Starfish Project.
Hailsham Rotary Club meets regularly at the Boship Farm Hotel, Hellingly and has 38 members who take part in many fund raising activities throughout the year. In addition to local community projects that address many of today's issues, Rotarians also react to international problems as they arise.
