About Rotary
Rotary was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris and three business colleagues in Chicago, USA. 100 years on, Rotary is now a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 31,000 Rotary clubs located in 167 countries.
The Rotary Club of Hailsham was founded in 1937 and has a current membership of 39. The members meet on Tuesday evenings at The Boship Farm Hotel, Lower Dicker, Hailsham. Meetings are a mixture of fellowship and speaker evenings and the Club has many social events throughout the year including a Ladies Night, Christmas Dinner and meeting with our foreign host clubs.
The Club also has a Ladies group consisting of wives and partners which meets every month and arranges a variety of events and outside visits including theatre trips. Plans are in hand for the Club’s 75th Anniversary in 2012.
Club business is carried out by a committee structure, which meets bi-monthly and comprises Club Service, Community, Vocational and International Committees which all report to the Club Council. Hailsham has three international contact clubs in Lille (Ouest) in France, Olpe in Germany and Haderslev in Denmark. Visits are made regularly and reciprocal arrangements usually resulting in a triennial meeting at Hailsham every third year.
The Club's involvement in community service has benefited numerous local organisations and worthy causes over the decades since it was formed and it assisted at the Festival of Transport for its first 21 years. The Beachy Head Marathon is now marshalled by the club and during the month of December each year a Father Christmas sleigh visits all of the major housing estates in the town raising much needed funds for local charities and international causes
