Hailsham Rotary Support The Starfish Project

The Hailsham Rotary Club has presented the Starfish Project with the final stage of their five year bursary fund at a recent club meeting. The cheque of £1,000 (out of the £5,000 allocated) was presented to Anne and David Blight, the founders of the charity.

The Club was aware of the Starfish Project which, by coincidence, held its courses in the Boship Farm Hotel in Hellingly.the same place as the meetings of the Hailsham Rotary Club were held. The Starfish Project is a method of training people who stammer (stutter) to both control and gain confidence over something that has controlled them. It does not aim to cure stammering as no cure has yet been found, but aims to control it and enable individuals who suffer from the problem to communicate.

It is not known what causes stammering but research shows that a combination of factors is involved. Stammering affects four times as many men as women and approximately 800,000 adults in the U.K. stammer, which is about 1% of the adult population.

The President of Hailsham Rotary Club, Francis Hodge, said “Our five year Centenary Project, seems to have gone by very quickly and the Starfish Project has had quite an effect on members of the Club. We will now consider whether to extend the award for a further period of time”
